For our 10th anniversary, we interviewed Larry Hecker, attorney at Hecker Pew PLLC. A UArizona alum, Larry has been involved in the startup and entrepreneurial community for decades, and serves on the TLA advisory board. For his demonstrated commitment and achievements in advancing UArizona commercialization and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, TLA honored him with the David N. Allen Award for Leadership and Vision in 2022.

David Allen, Ph.D., Vice President of Tech Launch Arizona, and Doug Hockstad, Director of Technology Transfer, speak about TLA's success. TLA has made great strides in commercialization since November of 2013. Last September, TLA released its Annual Report and Roadmap Update. TLA is building an innovation ecosystem of individuals, groups, companies, organizations and domain experts to provide assistance and direction to help commercialize UA research. Over the last 18 months, TLA has solidified its full team, and now has a complete system of policies and procedures in place. Along with domain experts to help determine the best commercial pathways for technologies, TLA also has a Commercialization Partners program, where Entrepreneurs-in-Residence and Executives-in-Residence help by contributing their expertise and leadership to helping faculty develop successful startups. TLA is just hitting its stride, and has an immense amount of potential to continue to be more seamless and provide better service to UA faculty. When comparing the past 18 months to the previous 18 months, TLA has demonstrated positive results and growth in all key areas, including invention disclosures, agreements, startups, and income. TLA is the continuation of research; the UA is a powerhouse in research. The results of that research through TLA are conveyed into the marketplace and represents a revitalizing force for the economy.

How do results and inventions stemming from research make their way from the lab to the bedside? In the early 2000s, Kevin Boesen, PharmD, of the UA College of Pharmacy, had a vision for a comprehensive medication therapy management system. Under Boesen's guidance, the College created both a software system and an education model that operated within the college for almost a decade. Working with TLA, Boesen, along with local entrepreneur Fletcher McCusker, launched a startup company – SinfoníaRx – in 2014. Three short years later in 2017, that company was acquired by Tabula Rasa HealthCare, a large company focused on leveraging technology to improve healthcare. The speakers will talk about the invention and experiences, and then field your questions about the research and technology, the company, and the launch of a UA startup. For our 10th anniversary, we interviewed Fletcher McCusker, CEO of UAVenture Capital. Fletcher was one of the first entrepreneurs we worked with as he helped launch SinfoníaRx, which was later acquired by TabulaRasa Healthcare. After that success he launched UAVenture Capital with his partner Michael Deitch with the goal of advancing early-stage UArizona startups. As a member of the TLA advisory board Fletcher has provided invaluable input as we've evolved our organization and the ecosystem.

For our 10th anniversary, we interviewed Joann MacMaster, CEO of the Desert Angels. Joann served as TLA's Director of Venture Development for 6 years before moving on to her current role at DA. Prior to that, she was the director of the UA Center for Innovation. Through the years, Joann as made innumerable contributions to the strategic development of TLA and has helped innumerable startups and entrepreneurial teams achieve their goals.

For our 10th anniversary, we interviewed Eric Smith at the UA Center for Innovation. Early on, Eric worked for TLA and helped build our commercialization network, with the goal of getting outside support and advice on commercializing UA inventions. Today, he runs the university's incubator network, which is a natural next stop for many startups launched through TLA. He reflects on how TLA not only provides a comparatively unique set of services to startup teams, he says, "It's done here and it's done really well."
