The Google Pixel 9 is an amazing phone and even outshines the iPhone 16 in some areas. But when it comes to raw performance, especially for gaming and demanding tasks, the iPhone/samsung leaves it in the dust.

Reviewing Google's Pixel 9a vs the Pixel 9, Pro and XL models, to see which of these AI-stuffed smartphones is best for you in 2025. I've been testing the camera tech, gaming abilities, battery life and overall experience of the Pixel 9a and its flagship siblings. So here's my comparison to see if the Pixel 9 Pro XL is worth that cash, or whether you should save some money. That Pixel 9a delivers a different camera setup to the other 9 series blowers, with a unique primary and ultra-wide sensor. Only the Pro models offer a telephoto shooter too, for getting closer to your subject - especially good for portrait photos. Likewise, the Pixel 9 Pro and XL offer more video features, including the online AI-powered Boost tool. All four are powered by the same Google Tensor G4 chipset, but the more you spend, the more memory you'll get. Gaming on the Pixel 9a is sadly a juddery affair if you opt for Wuthering Waves. Demanding titles are best left to the Pixel 9 Pro & XL with their 16GB RAM. Still, battery life is excellent on all four Google mobiles. You'll easily get a full day of action from a single charge, even with some gaming and camera play thrown in. Of course, the more expensive models do charge faster than that Pixel 9a. Unboxing Google's Pixel 9, the cheapest of that flagship phone foursome, with more basic camera tech but the same Tensor G4 AI shenanigans. Ahead of my Pixel 9 review, here's a closer look at the best features and bits of Google's mini marvel. Check out my comparison vs the Pro and Pro XL to see how all of the 2024 smartphones stack up! While the Pro phones boast a telephoto camera lens, the regular Google Pixel 9 makes do with digital zoom. Likewise you're missing a few other features, like UWB, an LTPO screen and the temperature sensor. But you're still getting that full AI experience thanks to the Tensor G4 that runs the show. Battery life is excellent here too. The Pixel 9, like its Pro siblings, can last all day without a strain. And yes, while there's no zoom lens, the camera tech pumps out crisp, realistic pictures and respectable 4K video (although the focus is a bit borky at times). As usual, Google is also offering a full seven years of Android and software updates here. So the Pixel 9 won't be defunct any time soon!
